The 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth

News 06.08.2010 16:07

The year 2010 is remarkable for the series of great anniversaries deserving to be celebrated in a big way.

Last year marked the 200th anniversary of Haydn's death and 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn's birth, and this year marks the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth.

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849),a great master of Romantic music, is one of the greatest Polish artists and a cultural icon of Poland. He is also one of the most often played piano composers in the world.

The great majority of Chopin's compositions were written for the piano as solo instrument; all his extant works feature the piano in one way or another. They are technically demanding, but emphasize nuance and expressive depth. Chopin invented musical forms such as the instrumental ballade, and made major innovations in the piano sonata, mazurka, waltz, nocturne, polonaise, étude, impromptu and prélude.
